The air is crisp, the leaves are falling, and pumpkin spice is everywhere. It’s fall, the coziest time of the year. In fact, the Danish have a name for the concept of cozy comfort that becomes more popular as the days grow shorter – hygge.
With more of us working from home and social distancing to prevent the community spread of COVID-19 this season, having a warm, comfortable, festive space is more important than ever for our well-being. “Now more than ever we are finding the true meaning of our homes: a place where we want to feel comforted, safe, and inspired,” interior designer Lauren Nelson told Better Homes & Garden. “There is so much unknown right now that we cannot control, but our homes are a space where we do have control over what we put in it, how we arrange it, and how it makes us feel.”
Ready to make your apartment cozy for fall? Here are simple decorating ideas to turn your space into the ultimate cozy apartment or cozy studio.
Fall Apartment Decorating
Just add pumpkins – Nothing says fall like everyone’s favorite orange gourd. Go all out with Halloween decorations, complete with carved jack-o-lanterns, or just pile a selection of small (and inexpensive) pumpkins, gourds and squash in a wooden bowl on your coffee table. #gourdgoals
Put a ring on it – Wreaths aren’t just for Christmas anymore. There are wreaths for every season and theme. Buy a ready-made fall wreath online to add autumn flair to your apartment. Or, if you’re feeling crafty, order your materials (a Styrofoam or straw wreath form, faux leaves, fall flowers, pinecones, acorns) and make your own wreath for a simple one-day DIY project at home. String with ribbon and hang your wreath on your door, on bookshelves, or in your windows.
Bring the outdoors in – Seasonal foliage and flowers in rich, autumnal colors give your space all the fall vibes. On your next socially distanced walk, collect branches and leaves to display in glass containers throughout your home. Spray paint the branches in gold or silver for a dramatic, minimalist look. Cover beautiful fall leaves in Modge Podge and glue them to posterboard for framing and create a gallery display.
Break out the blankets – Drape your couches and chairs with cozy, chunky cable knit throws and blankets. You can even DIY a chunky knit blanket – no knitting needles required. Add a classic plaid to the foot of your bed for extra coziness on those weekend mornings. Or place a rolled up wool blanket in warm, autumnal colors on your outdoor furniture so you can bundle up and enjoy the crisp weather on your balcony or patio.
Light a (faux) candle – As the days get shorter and darker, humans naturally crave more light. Most property managers don’t love the idea of open flames; however, you can get the same cozy vibe in a much safer way with flameless, battery-operated candles. They look just like the real thing without putting your security deposit at risk. You could even combine candles and pumpkins by drawing a circle around the top of the pumpkin and cutting a hole about an inch deep. Nestle a flameless tealight candle inside your gourd for a cute, inexpensive centerpiece for any table.
