Temperatures are finally starting to warm up, which means that pools will soon be opening for the summer season. It’s hard to beat a beautiful summer day at a beach, splashing around in the water and catching some rays—but most of us can’t make the trip to the sandy shores, so we rely on local pools instead.

Like other communal apartment spaces, such as the dog park, the laundry room or coworking spaces, it’s important to follow apartment pool etiquette and rules to ensure a positive pool experience for everyone.

7 Apartment Pool Etiquette

1. Follow posted community rules.

Every apartment complex has its own rules for the pool area, and it’s important to review these rules before entering the pool in the first place. While there are some apartment complex pool rules that apply to every property, there are other rules that are specific to the type of pool you are using or to your particular community. Adhering to these rules will not only let you keep your pool access privileges, but it will make the entire experience more enjoyable all around.

2. Don’t give the key or code to non-residents.

Apartment community pools are generally designed for residents only. Everyone deserves to feel at home while using the pool, which is why it’s so important to ensure that only residents have access. Make sure you’re only sharing the pool key or access code those you live with

You’ll also want to be mindful of non-residents trying to enter the pool behind you as you open the door. Some apartment complexes may allow you to bring a guest with you while you use the pool, but check your property’s list of rules before doing so.

3. Dress appropriately.

Putting on a stylish swimsuit is part of the fun. However, you’ll want to make sure you’re properly covered while you’re swimming. This helps keep the pool atmosphere fun and comfortable for everyone.

4. Be mindful when applying sunscreen.

Sunscreen is a must-have for any pool day, as it helps protect against uncomfortable sunburns. However, it can also be very messy. If you spill sunscreen on any community chairs or tables, be sure to clean it up. Sunscreen can also be very slippery, so you should also wipe up any spills on tiled floors. If you’re using a spray sunscreen, be mindful of the people around you when applying to avoid spraying in their direction.

5. Don’t hog chairs or loungers.

Pools have a limited number of chairs and loungers available. To ensure that everyone gets a fair chance to enjoy the pool, try to limit your use of a pool chair or lounger to an hour or two, especially when the pool is crowded. Don’t save chairs or loungers that you aren’t using.

6. Keep the volume down.

One of the mainstays in apartment community pool rules: you may love your summer playlist, but that doesn’t mean that everyone around you is going to. If you want to enjoy some tunes, do so with headphones on. This also goes for conversations. Keeping your voice at a reasonable volume while socializing is going to make the pool experience better for everyone.

7. Clean up after yourself.

Before leaving the pool area, be sure to clean up after yourself. Throw away any trash you may have created during your stay. Check the entire pool to make sure you aren’t leaving any items behind. Return all chairs, loungers, and tables to where you found them. No one likes a dirty or messy pool, so taking the extra time to clean up ensures that the next people to visit enjoy it just as much as you did.

Why are Etiquette and Pool Rules for Apartments Necessary?

You might be wondering why these etiquette rules are even necessary for fun at the pool. Overall, community rules ensure that everyone in your apartment complex can feel comfortable and relaxed  while using the pool. Other general etiquette is necessary because, as a public space, there will be others around and being mindful of them ensures that everyone can have fun this summer, not just you.
